Since Elon Musk founded Tesla Motors a decade ago, his electric car venture has been a thorn in the traditional auto manufacturers' side. Now, Musk has made another disruptive move by announcing he is scrapping the firm's patents. In a blog post on the Tesla website, he wrote "[the patents] have been removed, in the spirit of the open source movement, for the advancement of electric vehicle technology.
A change of law in 2012 meant that cars registered before 1960 no longer have to pass the yearly test for roadworthiness known as the MOT. However, a new EU directive means that, from 2018, this could be extended to all cars more than 30 years old, as long as they haven’t been substantially modified. General Motors will unveil a European concept car built on its radical new E-Flex platform at September’s Frankfurt Motor Show. The concept will feature radical styling, with a diesel engine acting as a generator for the concept’s electric motor. And General Motors is believed to be collaborating with urban electric scooter manufacturer Segway; the unnamed concept may be able to carry one or more of the £4000, gyroscope-controlled devices for use in town once you’ve parked.A new type of plug-in hybrid, the E-Flex platform made its debut at the 2007 Detroit Motor Show in the Chevy Volt concept car.
